Canara Bank Raises ₹2,042 Crore Through 8.10% AT1 Bonds

The bank accepted ₹2,042 crore against a ₹4,500 crore issue, allotting perpetual Basel III AT1 bonds at an 8.10% coupon to 29 investors.

What was filed

Canara Bank told the exchanges it has raised capital through Basel III-compliant Additional Tier I (AT1) bonds. The instrument is unsecured, subordinated, perpetual and non-convertible, issued as debentures with a face value of ₹1 crore each. The issue opened and closed on the same day, 16 September 2026, with allotment on 18 September 2026, per the filing.

How the issue was sized

The bond carried a base size with a green-shoe option on top. The bank accepted an amount below the advertised ceiling — its full base tranche plus a small slice of the green shoe. Interest is scheduled to be paid annually on 18 September, and the bonds are proposed to be listed on the NSE. The bank said it will inform the exchanges once listing is completed.

Why it matters to a holder

AT1 bonds count toward a bank's Tier I capital base under Basel III norms. For an equity holder, the issuance is a capital-management step that adds to the capital position through a debt-like perpetual instrument rather than equity, so existing shareholders are not diluted. The filing records the fund-raise as completed and allotted.

The issuance adds to Canara Bank's Tier I regulatory capital through a perpetual debt instrument rather than equity, so existing shareholders are not diluted; the accepted amount and coupon are recorded facts, not indicators of future performance.
