NHPC's Q1 FY27 profit edges up as new Subansiri Lower and Parbati-II units feed provisional sales

NHPC's board approved unaudited Q1 FY27 results in which part of revenue was booked provisionally, pending CERC tariff orders for two hydro projects.

What the board approved

NHPC's board met on 4 August 2026 and approved the unaudited standalone and consolidated financial results for the quarter ended 30 June 2026, after review by the Audit Committee and the joint statutory auditors. The results were filed with the NSE and BSE under SEBI's listing regulations, alongside auditor certificates on the company's listed debt securities and a nil-default statement.

The filing carries the company's standard reminder that, given the seasonal nature of hydro generation, its quarterly results vary from quarter to quarter — a point worth holding in mind when reading a single quarter in isolation.

New capacity and provisional revenue

The quarter's income was shaped in part by capacity that has recently come online. NHPC said it commissioned one 250 MW unit of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Project during the quarter, taking the total commissioned there to 1,000 MW (4 of 8 units). It also referenced the 800 MW Parbati-II project, commissioned in FY 2025-26.

Tariff petitions for both projects are pending before the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, so a portion of sales from each has been booked provisionally, subject to the CERC's final tariff orders. That is the crux for a reader: the approved tariffs, when they come, could revise these amounts.

Separately, the company noted that its Teesta-V Power Station (510 MW), damaged in the October 2023 flash flood, resumed commercial generation in July 2026 — after the quarter closed.

Debt, tax and the JPCL merger

On the balance sheet, the filing reports no default on outstanding loans or debt securities. NHPC also disclosed a private-placement raise of non-convertible securities on 29 May 2026, with proceeds fully utilised and no deviation from stated objects.

The company said that, following the Finance Act 2026, it has opted into a provision under the Income Tax Act from FY 2026-27 onward, which affects how current and deferred tax are recognised. The long-running amalgamation of wholly owned subsidiary Jalpower Corporation Limited (JPCL) into NHPC continues: a second-motion application filed with the MCA on 6 October 2025 remains pending.

For a holder, the quarter's profit rests in part on sales booked provisionally from Subansiri Lower and Parbati-II pending CERC tariff orders, so the final approved tariffs could revise those amounts; the results also reflect a change in the company's income-tax option from FY 2026-27.
