Tata Steel to Exit ISL Club, Transfers Football Subsidiary to Churchill Brothers for ₹100

A board committee approved transferring Tata Steel's entire stake in Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited — including the club's ISL sporting licence — to Churchill Brothers for a nominal sum.

What was approved

Tata Steel's Committee of Directors — constituted by the board on July 30, 2026 specifically to consider the divestment — approved the transfer of the company's entire equity stake in Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited (JFSPL), a wholly owned subsidiary, to Churchill Brothers Sports Club Private Limited. A Share Purchase Agreement was signed the same day, August 14, 2026. Per the filing, the buyer is not related to Tata Steel's promoter or promoter group, and the transaction is not a related party transaction.

The accompanying press release states the transfer, made under All India Football Federation rules, includes the club's Indian Super League sporting licence and the contracts of 12 players and 2 coaches, whom Churchill Brothers will take over from September 2026. Completion, expected around August 31, 2026, remains subject to AIFF approval and other conditions precedent.

A small unit, transferred for a token sum

The consideration is a nominal figure, and JFSPL is a negligible part of the group. As disclosed in the annexure, the subsidiary contributed a tiny fraction of Tata Steel's consolidated turnover in FY2025-26 and carried a negative net worth as of March 31, 2026 — the specifics are set out in the key-facts panel below.

Tata Steel framed the move as ensuring continuity for the club's players and coaching staff, and said it will continue to focus on grassroots and youth football, including the Tata Football Academy at Jamshedpur, while maintaining and repurposing its sporting infrastructure.

Stake transferred
100% (4,08,00,000 equity shares)
Consideration
₹100
JFSPL net worth as on 31 Mar 2026
₹(5.8) crore

The disclosed unit is immaterial to Tata Steel's consolidated financials — contributing 0.01% of turnover and carrying a negative net worth per the filing — so the transaction's direct financial impact is minimal. It marks the group's exit from professional ISL club ownership, alongside a stated continued focus on grassroots football.
